I am just at the start of a project where for the first time I am using ColdFusion MX, I have no background in PHP or ASP other than knowing what it looks like and how it works from a designers point of view. I have managed in just over a day to create a product admin page enabling you to insert, update and delete records from the mySQL database! I admit I am using Dreamweaver MX but I understand what is going on so who cares! I did have to install mySQL, ColdFusion MX and JRun4 on my Mac at work though which took days and really caused a lot of headaches compared to the easy installation on PC!Jon 6:09 PM Permalink
Tom put this rather interesting link on Linkomatic to Mitsubishi research lab's 'iGlassware'
"We propose wireless liquid level sensing glassware to aid in this task. Specially instrumented glassware detects fluid levels via a high-resolution capacitance measurement. A coil embedded in the table inductively couples power to the glasses, and provides a path for data exchange ."

As a web designer for the last 4 or so years I have used CSS for text formatting on many occasions. I have also used CSS to add repeating backgrounds to a page, I have however only built one site using CSS for all layout and formatting without the use of tables and that site is this very blog, not really a major challenge! However I have just started building a fairly large site using XHTML, CSS and Coldfusion. I do however think that the client will expect Netscape 4 users to see something so I have had to use a couple of tables here and there inside my DIV's. The main problem is I'm developing on OS X and don't have a PC at work to test on, you can only imagine the suprises I have waiting around the corner!Jon 11:34 AM Permalink

Just realised I'd forgotten to include Linkomatic as one of my links!! Soz Tom it should be there now. For those that don't know Tom posts loads of links to well designed, bizarre or humourous sites.Jon 3:24 PM Permalink
802.16 is to 802.11 what the M25 motorway is to the Basingstoke one way system. Designed to operate over a number of bands from 2GHz to 66GHz, 802.16 can work over 30 miles and pump data at speeds of up to 70Mbps. [ via James ]

A few minutes ago 2Advanced Studios launched the 4th version of their site, "Prophecy" which utilises Flash Remoting, FlashComm Server and an entirely dynamic back-end apparently. Obivously quite a few people had their eye on the countdown as it hit zero there was nothing for probably 10 minutes I tried to sneak a peek, finally I got through and i have to say it looks pretty damn nice as usual! The format is very similar to V3 but with a new colour palette and a few new tricks under the hood.Jon 5:24 PM Permalink
I've just been informed by my brother James that my feeds aren't working. Well apparently when Blogger moved over to the new system they seemed to reset all of my settings and so my feed was indeed turned off..

I saw this story on Zeldman.com. It seems AOL have pulled the plug on the remaining teams working on Mozilla in a mass dismantling of Netscape. However, Mozilla will continue it seems there is just too much public support to kill Mozilla.Jon 6:30 PM Permalink
I have just set up JRun4 for OS X on my work machine along with Coldfusion MX for J2EE Developer edition and finally mySQL. All of this I had to do mainly through the terminal in OS X, bearing in mind I am a designer with actionscript as my only geek skill. It took hours...literally, mainy due to the fact I re-installed ColdFusion a few times before realising I couldn't see the administrator because I was looking at the wrong port! So to those who know UNIX it should be easy, for those of you like me prepare yourself and don't coincide quitting cigarettes with the installation procedures.

I have just upgraded my work machine to OS X jaguar and installed Safari, I have 2 small issues with Safari, firstly some browser detection scripts think that I'm using an old version of Netscape?! and I don't like the way it renders fonts (seems to anti-alias them?). Oh and while I'm whining I can't play the tardis tennis game on OS X as it crashes my browser. Apart from that, I love it. No more random freezing and crashing and a much sexier interface!Jon 9:11 AM Permalink

I was having a look at BBC's site to check up on Wimbledon (seeing as I am living in Sydney these days) and came across this little gem of a Flash game, Tardis Tennis. Beware, this is a very addictive game!!!
