So with a little nudge from my brother I signed up for the Beta of GMail, Google's latest plan for world domination. Well I would like to find something nasty to say about it but I can't, it's very cool ( as web based mail goes!) yes you can search for a key word or name and bring up that email then click on a button to show the whole conversation, but my fave feature is the keyboard shortcuts which are turned off by default for some unknown reason?! Turning them on shows the main shortcuts at the bottom of the screen, simply pressing 'c' takes you to compose mail, 'n' goes to next message, 'y' then 'o' archives the current conversation and moves to the next one! I haven't had much time to play yet but I can assure you with 1000Mb of free storage this may well be my replacement for Yahoo Mail soon!Jon 9:29 AM Permalink

Everyone knows about Bluejacking by now but The Register reports that the new craze on commuter trains to London is "Toothing""Toothy toothing" says that he was flirting with a fellow commuter via Bluetooth for a couple of days on his normal train journey. Eventually, she suggested nipping into the lav for a quickie, and toothing was born.
Bizarre!

Ever wanted one of those cool little flash animations with flying clouds or rippling water...you know the ones. Well some people slave over 3D apps and After Effects for hours creating them and then in Advance Flash's case, sell them as '.fla' files on their website for a very reasonable amount! Also nice flash shopping cart on the site!

So everyone is busily blogging the arrival of Apple's new motion graphics application but as I was just discussing with monsieur Muller there seems to be a bit of inconsistency with the design of this section and the rest of Apple's website. I am presuming this may be to help people band the pro digital products together?Jon 2:17 PM Permalink

Apologies if this has already done the rounds but I was so impressed I had to share this link, my brother blogged about this flash visualisation of Google News. It seems that the number of related articles dictates the amount of screen real estate assigned to each article. Like it.Update: just realised that the Marcos Weskamp is behind this little gem, check out more of his flash craziness at http://marcosweskamp.marumushi.com/

Just a quick post for everyone in Australia. I read an article the other day in the Sydney Morning Herald about recycling computers and that certain companies will collect your old machines and in some cases such as Computerbank NSW refurbish computers to give to charities, schools and disadvantaged individuals. Dell actually collect your computer and if it is of any value offer vouchers against the purchase of a new Dell machine! Anyway, this website has all the info for recycling in Australia: http://www.tec.nccnsw.org.au/member/tec/projects/Waste/comp_recyc.htmlJon 12:19 PM Permalink

A couple of Aussie related posts for you:‘Segway of the sea’ starts shipping Down Under
- check out The Register's article."The fine folks at ScubaDoo World in Queensland have developed a sea scooter capable of reaching a stunning 2.5 knots. The Scuba-Doo gives divers the freedom to sit on a machine and drive the great ocean roads instead of being tied down with flippers, snorkels and other excessive diving gear. Weighing just 94 lbs with battery, the Scuba-Doo looks like a scuba-dooper way to dive in comfort and style."
Aussie firms fight to take biggest loss for music downloads
"Aussie ISP Teltstra last week slashed the price of songs downloaded from its BigPond Music service to 99 cents (US$0.75) each from A$1.49 for subscribers and A$1.89 for the rest of the plebs. Rival Destra, which proudly bills itself as Australia's DRM (digital rights management) pioneer, did Telstra one better by cutting its per track cost to 89 cents, vowing it "not be undercut by Telstra or any other new player to the marketplace.” Both companies have limited the price cuts to April at this time."
Let's hope they keep fighting!!

This post is really for my own future reference but it may help someone if they are as new to MySQL as I am. I am just completing a page that returns the results of a Rally competition, I needed to list the outright positions of the Driver championship as a table however the table lists all points by individual event and I needed to add up all the points for each driver across all events and return the recordset ordered by the least number of points. I knew I could use SUM(expr) to total the points but wasn't sure how to order by this new value which is when I came across 'AS'. The SQL statement is as follows:SELECT *,SUM(OutrightPoints) AS position FROM table GROUP BY DriverID ORDER BY position
As you can see using 'AS' assigns the expression result to 'position' so you can use that for ORDER BY.
That one had me scratching my head for some time!
