Adobe Type Manager sucks on the PC, that's a fact I had to live with until recently. When I was on OS X I had Extensis Suitcase doing the hard work for me and when I switched back I was very unimpressed with the outdated Adobe software on my work machine so I found a great alternative. Enter FontHit, this freeware font manager is a piece of cake to use you can even drag and drop zip files onto the interface to install or preview the font. It's simple and effective and once the next release comes out in the next couple of weeks there should be a fix for the slightly strange bug which prevents windows from shutting down without manually exiting the application in the system tray.

It seems Extensis doesn't care anymore of the PC version! Suitcase for PC hasn't been updated since ages while they make the best out of the Mac version. I've switched to OT1 Font Manager some time ago, mainly because it's possible to create groups of fonts and install/deinstall them which is very valuable!

You can get Suitcase for PC too.
